MIJNshop & MIJNcollectie, June 8 -14
The MIJNshop, a pop-up store giving new life to a previously vacant building in the centre of Heerlen, is the place to discover (and purchase) the MIJNcollectie: design clothing inspired by miners’ clothing.
The MIJNcollectie is created by Linda Friesen, Ebby Port and Gabriel Guevera, three young fashion designers from South Limburg in the south of the Netherlands. The collection is produced in collaboration with young people from 100%Heerlen, an organisation offering on-the-job training for youths and young adults. Every month, one of the designers presents a unique, haute couture design in the MIJNshop. Each design is inspired by mine workers’ clothing of yesteryear as well as by one of the communities of immigrants that worked in South Limburg’s mining district (workers from Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Morocco, Spain and Friesland). Young people from 100%Heerlen add ten wearable items to the MIJNcollectie every month.
Volunteers from various districts in Heerlen run the MIJNshop, which also has space for production and presentation. Besides spotlighting young fashion talent, the project creates a thematic representation of the identity of the former mining region, uniting past and present through a collection of contemporary mine workers’ clothing, as a ‘second skin for Heerlen’. As such, the MIJNshop & MIJNcollectie functions as a dynamic flywheel that connects social, economic, political and cultural mechanisms and issues.
The MIJNcollectie will also be on show in Museum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht from 8 to 14 June during the FASHIONCLASH Festival, and from 3 to 13 July in the Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam throughout the Amsterdam FashionWeek.
The MIJNshop & MIJNcollectie is a collaboration between SCHUNCK*, Stichting Jaar van de Mijnen M2015, FASHIONCLASH and 100%Heerlen.
